Directions and Decisions

The counsel of the Lord is invaluable. His way is always right. His decisions never fail. The judgment of the Lord is true. The basis of His every decision is His perfect will, which is eternal and unchanging. He knows the end from the beginning because He is the Alpha and the Omega.

God made us; we did not make ourselves. He gave Adam and Eve free will to decide, but this was forfeited with their choice of sin and disobedient rebellion. Man’s decisions have been controlled by sin ever since. Sin directs man’s steps in blind darkness. Satan assures men they are masters of their own destiny and captains of their own soul.

In truth, the devil is God’s devil (Luther), and God has made him the dark lord over the sons of disobedience. Satan tempts sinful flesh to disobey God, and man readily complies…all the time. Man’s way is sin, and his destination is the door of death, at the house of destruction. The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps (Prv 16:9). This is true for the upright and the wicked, who have been made by God for the day of evil (Prv 16:4).

Of course, the wicked loathe the truth of God’s providence. They despise the sovereignty of God, in direction and decisions. They roll the dice and play the lottery unaware that every decision is from the Lord (Prv 16:33). This includes their place as vessels of wrath, prepared for destruction (Rom 9:22). There is no fear of God in this because there is no faith in the truth of God.

Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord (Prv 20:24), which means the about-face turn of repentance from sin to faith is granted by the grace of God. The Lord is the Maker of the rich and the poor (Prv 22:2), the righteous and the unrighteous.

It is impossible for a man or demon to thwart the will of God. Even if one plans to go to this city or that one to profit, God’s will must prevail, for better or worse. There are consequences for disobedience to God’s Word, which is His will. While God never fails, man struggles to do anything right. Only God can direct a man’s step without stumbling, but stumbling is worked for good for those who love God.

Christian, is your ambition to please God? Then, trust Him. Do you want the will of God for your life? You can read all about that in the Bible! Whereas, the reprobate and you share in God’s providence, you are privy to irresistible grace. Grace abounds toward God’s saved ones. They are walking on the way of salvation, and God will not allow their feet to stumble when trouble comes to visit them. Suffer they may, but the course is set, and Christians walk by the Spirit, who guides them into all truth. Here is freedom.

On the day of decision, it is God, who is willing and doing His good pleasure in the uncertain saint, at the crossroads of today. His instruction is to follow, and the task is to “walk.” Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who is authoring and perfecting your faith, which pleases God. Be diligent with your seeking Him, who is the Rewarder.

Brethren, pray without ceasing on your walk with Him who knows the Way. Follow the voice of your Good Shepherd, who leads you, and whose Word does not fail. He is your Life, along the Way of truth. He is the Light for your path. His plans are good for you. His path is right. Follow Christ, and shun the incessant disappointments produced by the world. Only He knows the way because He alone is the Way. Everything else is on a “need to know“ basis, and if today, you do not know, then, today, you do not need to know. Pray and wait.
