God’s Witness Against You

Men do not live in terror as they should. If people understood that God has announced His judgment against humanity, they would fear and tremble at the prospect of God’s wrath in just punishment, directed against each person (Mt 3:7; Lk 3:7; Rom 1:18; 1 Thess 1:10).

Ignorance of the Bible is itself a judgment against reprobate humanity. If you were to read that God has spoken to man, proclaimed judgment upon his insatiable habit of sin, then it would simply be prudent for each person to investigate God’s case against man.

The universal inheritance of sin (Rom 5:12–21), coupled with the universal practice of sin (Rom 3:23), begs the question of why God allows sin to continue its increase? Unchecked sin, that is, unconvicted sin is itself a judgment of God against the sinner (Rom 1:18–32). Why do men continue in sin? It is because the Holy Spirit has not brought the grace of conviction and repentance (Acts 5:31; 11:18; 2 Tim 2:25).

When a person laments, grieves, and hates her sin, she has received grace. When there is no sorrow and no turning from sin, the judgment is in effect. In days gone by, men would put on sackcloth and throw ashes on their heads, as a display of their affliction for sin. They knew they were guilty and deserved punishment.

The fact that sin is not taken seriously, by many, is seen in the active acceptance of disobedience. The wicked call that which is right in God’s Word…wrong. They call that which is wrong in God’s Word…right. The unrighteous go so far as to celebrate sin. This is an abomination in the eyes of God, who turns the ungodly over to a reprobate mind. The result is an increase in sinful behavior, which is also evidence of God’s judgment.

Who can stop a sinner from sinning? It is not his sinful flesh. It is not God’s Law, which only stimulates sin in the carnal man. There is no discipline, nor rigor, nor regimen that can stop a person from sinning against God. To cease from sin is pure mercy and grace granted by God’s Holy Spirit.

To experience grace unto salvation has its daily application. There is no resolution, nor vow, that can compel one to cease from offending the Almighty. When the Holy Spirit begins and continues the sanctification of a redeemed person, then progress manifests. Sin abates, and obedience begins to appear.

Have you experienced such grace to know the truth of God’s Word, to live in His Word, and witness the powerful results of God’s Word changing you? If yes, rejoice, and again I say rejoice. If no, then know for sure God’s witness against you.

God has revealed the truth of man’s rebellion in the Garden of Eden, and in his current wilderness. Man and God are at enmity. Your daily practice of lawless living demands justice. God has a perfect accounting of your crimes against His crown. Each sin is an offense against infinite majesty. Each sin, therefore, warrants infinite punishment. This is the reason for hell’s eternal nature.

Be not deceived, God is not mocked for being slow to wrath. The terrible day of His judgment will have you in attendance. What defense could you possibly give? Do you really believe you are a good person? Do you really believe God compares you against other sinners? Do you really believe your good works account for anything?

God’s witness against you, found in the Bible, is that you are not good, and your good works are entirely stained with sin. You are compared with the perfect man, Jesus Christ, who was without sin. You must be assured that you have fallen far short of His glory.

What should you do? First, open the Bible. By not doing this, you demonstrate God’s judgment against you. Second, pray for wisdom in this matter. By not doing this, you demonstrate your unbelief in His willingness to answer prayer. Third, believe God’s witness against you. By not doing this, you demonstrate your unbelief about yourself. Finally, repent of your sins and trust Christ. By not doing this, you demonstrate your unbelief about God in Christ. Thus, you have God’s witness against you. Ignoring or denying God’s witness against you changes nothing, and because God does not change, His witness against you remains.
