Particular Grace

God’s purpose in election is to create a holy people set apart from the world (Rom 8:29). Because the elect were in Adam when he sinned, God’s chosen people must be saved by grace (Acts 15:11; Eph 2:5, 8; 2 Tim 1:9).

Grace is the special work of God to call out, gather, and set apart a people for His own possession (Ex 19:5; Dt 4:20; 14:2; 1 Pet 2:9). Particular grace displays the antithetical relationship between God’s one holy nation (Dt 7:6; 1 Pet 2:9) and all the rest of the raging nations in the world (Ps 2). Grace is what separates saints from sinners.

Grace is required for salvation (Eph 2:8). It is the work of God, which He undertakes when the Holy Spirit baptizes an elect soul and takes up permanent abode in the heart of the now regenerate soul (Jn 1:33; Acts 11:16; 1 Cor 12:13). Grace has given the new saint a faith that justifies her (Rom 5:1). She is made alive in vital union with Christ, who is God (1 Cor 15:22; Eph 2:5; Col 2:13; 1 Pet 3:18).

The indwelling Spirit is the agent of grace (Zech 12:10; Heb 10:29), which is an internal work in the heart of the Christian (2 Cor 4:6). The believer in Jesus discards the old life he lived as a slave to sin (Eph 4:22; Rom 6:6). The Holy Spirit, in the monergistic work of sanctification, is replacing the former lusts of believers with a new, powerful affection for the things of God (2 Thess 2:13). The new life in Christ is marked by a desire for the Word of God; and the new creature’s life choices and activities are directed by God and toward God (2 Cor 5:17).

Grace requires and requests nothing from its objects (Rom 5:15). There are no conditions placed on the objects of God’s grace (Eph 1:16). Particular grace finds God’s elect in the preaching of the Gospel (Rom 10:14–17). Grace is the irresistible drawing of God the Father to God the Son (Jn 6:37; Rom 9:19). The objects, drawn by grace to Christ, are called out of the mass of humanity. The Word of God cuts, divides, and separates (Heb 4:12), freeing God’s people from slavery to sin (Rom 6:6; Gal 5:1).

God does not give grace to all people without exception (Rom 4:16; 2 Cor 4:15). His grace is particular to His chosen ones (Acts 6:8; Rom 4:16). It is an error to say that there is grace common to all people (Ps 84:11; Rom 5:15). The reason is that grace is an internal work of the Holy Spirit.

The wrong belief and teaching of common grace for unregenerate people (Rom 12:3; 1 Cor 15:10; 2 Cor 8:1), inevitably leads to the general offer of the gospel to all men. Knowing grace is particular for God’s elect, for a preacher to tell all people that God desires their salvation is a denial of the doctrine of God’s sovereign predestination (Acts 4:28; Rom 8:29–30; 1 Cor 2:7; Eph 1:5, 11). It is offering a false gospel — one that cannot save those who imagine they are using their free will to decide to apply it to themselves.

Legion are the peddlers of the Word of God, offering salvation to all men. These are deluded by the demon that blinds the minds of men, from seeing the Gospel of grace (2 Cor 4:4). The true Gospel of Jesus Christ is a grace itself. The Spirit of grace fills the preacher of grace and sends him to people ordained to receive grace from the Word of life, which is God’s gracious message, the Word that came to save His people from their sins (Mt 1:21).

All the works of grace-less men are filthy rags. They are tainted with pride from a glory-seeking heart. God gives no favor for these works, which merit nothing. It is not even grace when God restrains the sins of the wicked. For these, God has issued law and governing authorities. Even human governments, ordained by God for civil righteousness and order, are not grace from God.

Grace, as we have seen is God’s particular favor, unto salvation, for His chosen people. Grace abounds toward the elect, vessels of mercy (Rom 9:23), so that God might be glorified. As grace separates the regenerate from the unregenerate, God is glorified in His just judgment of the grace-less reprobate. Without grace, men cannot be saved, regardless of their free will decisions and choices.

Particular grace is an uncommon topic to most Christians, who are actually universalists or conditionalists offering a cheap, worthless, false gospel. If you have been deceived by common grace and the peddled offer of salvation by human choice, then repent and believe the Gospel of sovereign, particular grace, alone.
