The Irony of St. Patrick’s Day (like St. Valentine’s Day)

Distortion is the day of remembrance of the saints. Whether it be Patrick, Valentine, or all saints — there is always something missing to the revelry on these vacuous days of celebration on the annual calendar.

Sometimes these days are turned into bids for national identity or mandatory days of expression of eros; but what should be the meaning of these things, if they are to be remembered at all? Of course, it is the true story of the saints.

Both Valentine and Patrick are great stories of suffering and sacrifice for the advance of the Gospel in the kingdom of darkness. People who bear witness of Christ, and who sacrifice themselves so that others may know the only Savior of sinners, are noble.

Gluttons have no need for Valentine, and drunkards have no need for Patrick, unless their famous names are identified with the Lord Jesus Christ, who sets the sinner free from sin.

So today, remember the Christ who captured the heart of the missionary, Patrick, and who inspired the martyr, Valentine. Taste and see that He alone is sweet and spirited, to change men from foolish revelers into slaves of righteousness.
