There is No God Like This One
God is sovereign. There is no more terrifying, and coincidentally, comforting thought we could conjure. He does whatever He pleases (Ps 115:3; 135:6). No will of man or demon can stand against the counsel of the Lord (Prv 19:21). No choice of fallen creatures, nor any decision cast in the lap overrides God’s sovereign providence, derived from His eternal will and unchangeable purpose (Heb 6:17).
God’s purpose is established (Is 46:10). The Lord has done what He purposed; He has accomplished His Word, which He commanded from days of old (Lam 2:17). He spoke His purpose regarding the inhabitants of Babylon, and then He performed what He said He would do (Jer 51:12). Even Job, who suffered greatly, was able to pray, “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted (Job 42:2).”
The Lord Himself takes ownership in these matters, “Just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned, so it will stand (Is 14:24).” It can be as broad as Babylon or as intimate as one man. Job is helpful to us as he reflects, “You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for You (Job 22:28).
No man may ever boast in his course in this life. Our God is the Potter, and we all are but clay (Jer 18:6; Rom 9:19–23). He has determined the number of our days, in our vaporous stay in the world (Ps 139:16). Some men fear God in the days appointed for them. He will make them know His covenant (Ps 25:14). Most do not fear God. They deny the work of His hands. They suppress the truth about Him (Rom 1:18). They refuse to acknowledge, “The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, even the wicked for the day of evil (Prv 16:4).”
Pause to consider such profound revelation. God promises to have mercy upon whom He will have mercy (Rom 9:15). God created all things (Rev 4:11), according to His will. It is all from Him (Rom 11:36). It all goes through Him, and it all ends up at His seat of judgment (2 Cor 5:10). In the beginning of space and time, it was the Word of God calling all things into existence. How reliable is the Word of God? God’s Word answers, “So shall My Word be which goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it (Is 55:11).”
The Christian is blessed to know and love God’s Word. The Bible was written for us, so that our joy would be complete (1 Jn 1:4). For God spoke and it was done (Ps 33:9), declaring the end from the beginning (Is 46:10). What God declared long ago, went forth in prophetic proclamation, and then He acted, suddenly, and it came to pass (Is 48:3).
Friend, got plans? Be ever aware that man makes his plans, but God directs his steps (Prv 16:9). Do you have decisions to make? Be it known that every decision is from God (Prv 16:33). Do you have things you wish to accomplish? The Lord accomplishes what concerns us (Ps 57:2; 138:8). Do you have work to do? God does all our works for us (Is 26:12). Do you have aspirations to be rich? The Lord is Maker of both rich and poor (Prv 22:2).
God’s hand in everything was predestined to occur (Acts 4:27–28). The nations rage against God and His Anointed (Ps 2), but all nations are nothing before Him. They are meaningless (Is 40:17–19). Got questions about why things are the way they are, today? Just remember, “There is no wisdom and no understanding and no counsel against the Lord (Prv 21:30).”
There are dark days in the counsel of the Lord (Jer 4:28), but there is also salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). The good news for the believer in Jesus is that God is working the good days and the bad days together for our good (Rom 8:28). David had his victories and his defeats, but in the end he served the purpose of God in his own generation (Acts 13:36).
Christian, who are you dealing with in the current matters of your life? Is this the God you claim to serve and worship? “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all (1 Chr 29:11).”
Dear brother or sister, let us remember the plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord (Prv 16:1) — the Lord, who has established His throne in the heavens; and whose sovereignty rules over all (Ps 103:19). May these truths from God’s Word be your blessing, today.
In our world of uncertainty, everything is certain from God’s perspective because He ordered it all to be that way. To know this is great joy in the Spirit. To live it, we must be reminded of it. To believe it is a gift from the One who gifted it.
The one who does not believe it, who denies it and works against it, yes, this should be the most terrifying news you have ever encountered. The reason is that the rest of what has been revealed does not bode well for you. Therefore, repent of your sins and unbelief, while it is yet called, “today.” Tomorrow, even your next breath, is in His determinate counsel and control. Only the fool says in his heart, “There is no God like this one (Ps 14:1; 53:1).” Only the wise praise Him saying, “There is no God like this one.”
