Why God has No Faith in You
“Have faith in God: God has faith in you,” is a pleasant enough sounding sentiment. It is often used by those driven to help others with psychology. Our question, as with all human philosophy, implores, “Is it true?”
First, of those who claim the Christian faith, many believe that people dead in sin have a willingness and ability to generate a faith that can transform their lives. They encourage others to take a “blind leap of faith” to trust Jesus Christ. “Have faith in God!” they say.
Second, to further spur the spiritually dead, the Christian tells the unbeliever, “God has faith in you.” It is our purpose here to debunk both notions.
Easy-believism has ravaged the American church for centuries. If we were to do an exit poll of those claiming to be Christian at their death, most would say, “I made the free will decision to let Jesus be my Savior.” In other words, most people have faith in their wise choice of Jesus Messiah. Further, they would say that the Gospel presentation they heard from the church, and believed by them, is that they should have faith in God. Their faith has saved them, according to their own profession. The problem is that this is a misplaced faith.
Sadly, this is the false gospel that has led many on the wide way of destruction. It is a heresy perpetuated for centuries by false teachers like Pelagius, Socinus, and Arminius. Save for a remnant of Christians, this is American Christianity.
True Christianity begins with God and His free will choice to save some but not all people (Rom 11:5). Christ Jesus is not a commodity to be hawked to consumers. He is the sovereign Son of God who was sent into the world to save His people, God’s elect, from their sins (Mt 1:21). He successfully atoned for each of God’s chosen remnant from every nation, tribe, and tongue (Rev 5:9).
It is blasphemy to say, “God has faith in you.” This is a blatant lie for sure. God has faith in no one. Where in Scripture do we find any mention of God having faith in anything?
This, of course, is impossible because God is all-knowing and all-powerful. Faith is the conviction of things not seen (Heb 11:1). God sees everything, so faith is not an attribute of God.
God demands faith from His people (Heb 11:6), but He is the One who makes them faithful (Gal 5:22). Faith is a gift imparted by God to those He has regenerated (Phil 1:29; 1 Pet 1:3). These people have faith in God because the faith-giver indwells them (Rom 8:9, 11, Heb 12:2).
Those who talk of the blind leap of faith are themselves blind to what faith actually is in reality. Faith is a product of assurance (Heb 11:1). God gives His Spirit as a gift (Acts 2:38; 10:45), who illumines the covenant promise. The Spirit, who knows the faithfulness of God, assures those He indwells that all the promises of God in Christ are “Yes!” and “Amen!” We believe because He made us believe.
For God to put His imaginary faith in sinful man is an abominable notion and twisted theology. It removes deity from God and reduces Him to the realm of the uncertain.
When Christians see pithy quips of theology, they must become theologians. They must discern the truth from the lies. As iron sharpens iron, they must be their brother’s keeper. We have the Word of God for the purpose of reproof and correction (2 Tim 3:16). Let us help one another to rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Tim 2:15).
Friend, no one should tell you to have faith in God. Instead, he should ask you if the grace of faith has been gifted to you or not (Rom 12:3; 1 Cor 12:9; Gal 3:22; 5:22; Eph 2:8–9; Heb 12:2). Know for sure that God has no faith in you. You are a sinner, sinful, and untrustworthy. If you have believed this lie from hell, then repent, putting no confidence in your flesh (Phil 3:3). Turn to the true Gospel of God, Jesus Christ, who alone gives faith, by sending His Spirit to His people.
